Structural Integration - the 12 session series as taught by Thomas Myers in the tradition of Dr Ida P Rolf. Specific Deep Tissue and Myofascial techniques, in combination with movement designed to improve postural alignment. It may be effective with chronic muscular pain, chronic muscle injuries, limited flexibility and range of motion and fibromyalgia. SI is a myofascial system combining soft tissue manipulation and movement education to restore the body to its natural state of alignment and BALANCE - by lengthening, restoring, and reorganizing the FASCIA, the connective tissue matrix of the body. Dr Rolf developed a theory that the body's aches and pains arose from basic imbalances in posture and alignment, which were created and reinforced over time by gravity and learned responses among muscles and fascia - the sheath-like connective tissue that surrounds and binds muscles together. SI developed as a way to "restructure" muscles and fascia. The focus on manipulating fascia is part of what distinguishes if from chiropractic, which deals with bones, and massage, which works on muscles. The client wears shorts, two piece bathing suit, sports bra, tube top, or underwear. SI is a combination of movement, and hands on techniques, as well as postural assessments, and therefore the client has to be dressed throughout the session, in attire mentioned above. The first 4 sessions deals with the sleeve-the superficial fascia. This is the outer fascial layer. This is the part of your body that does the "doing", the fast movements. The goal is to open, organize and lengthen the superficial laters, and prepare the body for the deeper core work. The next 4 sessions are core sessions, which are referred to as deeper sessions. This layer is your "beingness", the area of slow, postural movements. The goal is to open, lengthen, organize and create space in the intrinsic layers of the soft tissue. The final 4 sessions are integrating sessions where we work to improve functional movement. SI works to facilitate more efficient use of muscles, allowing your body to conserve energy, and create more refined patterns of movement with less effort. This reduces chronic stress and enhances neurological functioning. Dr Rolf believed form determines function. SI can create a more adaptable and supportive form that can function more optimally in the field of gravity. The field of gravity is an unseen force consistently interacting with the human body. SI re-educates the person and the human body to live and move in harmony with the field of gravity instead of being in conflict with it.
